I pass an enormous banyan tree and continue through the rainforest until I come to a small bridge, where I can look over more waterfalls cascading from pool to pool. imageBROKER/Robert Haasmann/Getty Images/imageBROKER RF There are more waterfall pools to see on the Pipiwai Trail. Although it offers only a partial view of a 200-foot waterfall, it is great for people looking for a shorter hike. The first stop on the trail, the Makahiku Falls overlook, is only about a half-mile in. The wide dirt path follows the stream to the back of the valley, where there are more waterfalls to see. The hike is 4 miles round trip with an 800-foot elevation gain and takes about two hours to complete. I take photos of the scenic waterfalls and their pools before heading in the direction of the Pipiwai trailhead. The ranger said there is a project in the works to restore the monitoring system, but until then, the Pools of Oheo are closed indefinitely. Flash floods, which can happen in seconds, have caused visitor deaths in this park people have also died after falling or jumping from great heights. This technology tells rangers when a flash flood might occur, allowing time to evacuate the pools. It has not worked for a while,” a park ranger told me on the phone later. “It was closed due to our monitoring system. During my previous visits, it was common to see people swimming in the first two pools, but the park has now closed access to the pools. It’s as beautiful and tranquil as it sounds. The Pools of Oheo are a long series of waterfall pools spilling into each other. (Many people may know it by its former name, “Seven Sacred Pools,” but the name is not preferred anymore because these pools are not sacred and there are more than seven.)Ībout midway through the Pipiwai Trail in Kipahulu, the surrounding vegetation turns into a dense bamboo forest. It takes visitors past archaeological sites - reminders that this land was home to generations of Native Hawaiians and is still very much cherished today - and then to the Pools of Oheo (pronounced OH-HEY-OH). This park has two trails: Kuloa Point Trail and the Pipiwai Trail. Now I have a clearer understanding of why. ![]() I’ve heard of the many battles over this land between the chiefs of Maui and the chiefs of Hawaii Island. Outside on the deck, I see Hawaii Island, the “Big Island,” staring back at me 30 miles across the channel. I learn more about the abundant natural resources and cultural history of the area. ![]() I first stop by the visitor center, which has exhibits. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can spend the night at the national park’s campground, leisurely hike the trails in the morning and then make the return drive back on the Road to Hana to Kahului in daylight. On a recent trip, I arrive in the afternoon with enough sun in the sky to begin hiking, but I know that I might have to drive back in the dark. It’s worth sacrificing those other stops though, as tempting as they may be, because the waterfalls at the national park are worth seeing. From Kahului to the national park, the journey takes approximately four hours, but it can take longer if you decide to make more stops along the way. It’s a long drive on the Road to Hana, plus an additional 12 miles to reach Kipahulu. ![]()
